go softly quietly friend

Harvey S. Mozolak

she cannot hear
the door thump
the creak of shoes
on a nearby floor
the bird’s chatter
a rabbit
among the leftover winter leaves
the quick slash
of an early fly
close
will catch her eye
but the dullness has begun
to slow the watch
to twitching in her sleep
